james ross is a guitarist and composer living in brooklyn, n.y. originally from pittsburgh, pa., he has studied guitar at the university of pittsburgh and the mannes college of music in new york city. he has studied sitar with pandit krishna bhatt, and north indian classical music and composition with la monte young and marian zazeela. a composer in a variety of genres, james has written music for orchestral and chamber ensembles, as well as solo music for the guitar and the zhongruan (a type of chinese lute). he has also performed and recorded electronic and improvised music. recent performances as a composer and performer on the electric guitar, laptop and other instruments include sets at the bell house, at the small beast at the delancey with percussionist joseph benzola, a performance with kyle bobby dunn at issue project room, at pianos with richard lainhart, at glasslands gallery with michael vincent waller, at goodbye blue monday with david beardsley, providing live music for katherine liberovskaya and ursula scherrer�s optosonic tea series at diapason gallery in brooklyn, with video artist alex carpenter at the tank in manhattan, and at damrosch park at lincoln center as part of the guitar ensemble for rhys chatham�s �a crimson grail.� a recording of the -crimson grail- performance was released on nonesuch records on sept. 14, 2010. as a classical guitarist, james has performed as a soloist and ensemble player throughout the northeastern united states. he received a solo recitalist fellowship in 1992 from the pennsylvania council on the arts and won the 1993 mannes college of music concerto competition, resulting in a performance of joaquin rodrigo�s �fantasia para gentilhombre,� at symphony space in new york city.

with his last ep offering on keinemusik, &me displayed himself once again as supplier of anthems that easily reconcile style with general floor purpose. you would think, such an universal and inexhaustible tune as this very �after dark� can only be a lucky hit. but no, he�s knocking out the classic material just like that. another example? catalog number km028, his brandnew �trilogy� ep. the titletrack on a initially places a synth arpeggio behind a kick that in dryness is hardly to excel. the beat of -trilogy- is then seasoned with rimshot patterns until the saturated bassdrum comes in and paves the way to the dancefloor. &me even refines his knack for stoic grooves on this jam and once again shows his sure feeling for suitable vocal features. sabotas croon comes devoid of big gestures and still knows the ropes to appeal to the collective mentality of a clubcrowd. on the flipside, �woods� is living up to its name from the very beginning. woody percussions are thumping within an almost subtropical scenario that�s frequently pervaded by mighty synth clouds. and once again, there�s an arpeggio sneaking in that at some point is taking the lead in this strictly instrumental affair. add a break building that will educe a floor�s complete euphoric potential without going for the rather mindless escalation and there you have it: a b-side that�s actually more of an a-competitor.

parasol dance embodies the musical headway and fruition fabio experienced exploring different soundscapes and rhythms in his london based studio this last year. the crisp analogue cuts in the album are peppered with monesis organic evolution from the new jersey sound drawing inspiration from jazz, funk and even acid/jackin house, all the while never faltering on the end product of raw undulating grooves.

on their 2013 debut album voyage, l.a. duo de lux introduced their singular sound, a fusion of post-punk, disco, funk and synth wizardry. fun though voyage was, described by the guardian as -intricate, witty, inventive, dazzling and by dj mag as fresh, immediate, for their follow-up, de lux felt compelled to add an element of social commentary to the mix.

uabos, aka matteo pepe, is a young and rising start from the fashion capital of europe. this milan musician melts the mediterranean with 707 attitude, connecting his homeland with the iconic floor grooves of chicago. warbling acid warmth gives way to spiralling female samples as dusk sets in. the track is pure golden sunshine. tweaked bars are woven through clean drums to form an energy-filled track of explosive properties. polished rhythm patterns scaffold the ep. from this solid base flow clever melodies and dancefloor subtlety. 303s trickle against thick and rich chords for the textured tones of abc dream . uabos grabs his audience, holding them with hypnotic harmonies and an entrancing elegance. but with that is an intoxicating funk, one epitomized in the drill . toms and pads introduce. snares snap as a deep and dense build is constructed, layers bubbling arpeggios support cascading chords for a chitown streaked disco romp. the finale, squash , is living musical liquid. a syrup of synthesized squawk squirms under soaring notes and crisp beats for a jackin infusion.

available on vinyl (limited to 200 copies, no repress). release number eight on telefonplan is an all family affair. joining mad mats & toolis team of artists is swedish producer wiz andreas saag. mr saag has taken the leap from local talk and now makes his debut on telefonplan. opening track justice is dark, deep and with a sumptuous bass to sink your teeth into. it is rough and punchy with a clever vocal sample that almost works like a chant. justice comes in two versions, for those of you who like your song instrumental we have made sure your wish is granted too, it still got enough intensity about it without losing the pulsating heaviness. on the flipside, call of yacuma could be described as a grittier and stripped down version of andreas previous local talk track in the box. it is pure simplicity and groove makes it simply irresistible. listening to these tracks it is clear mr saag has been influenced by living in berlin these past years. both justice and call of yacuma wouldnt sound out of place in a dark club with a big soundsystem late at night. just make sure you get past the bouncer while entering the club.

now living in warsaw, donnell knox was well known, along with black nation s jay denham for forging a tough, distinct kalamazoo techno sound in the 90s. his label, sonic mind, put out some very coveted, underground wax that still sounds unique, extra rugged, and fresh. well d-knox is now on a bit of a comeback mission it seems, with some really inspiring new material, and �africa calling�. the first version, created to donnell�s much loved �spirit man� alias, is a soulful trek through layers of pads and emotive synth work. the simple, but uplifting, vocal snippet really gives it an organic and spiritual feel, the tempo is driving and quick, but the overall vibe is laid back and deep. remixes come from the likes of brooklyn based titonton duvante, who maximizes a synth pattern to a form a beautiful, reaching, version, while canada�a rennie foster channels his futago traxx style to present a full on tribal, drum based mix with added vocal pieces. also, detroit transplant, now living in canada as well, j garrett goes in with a very emotional, warm, string laden take. the ep is capped off with another version from donnell that could stand as it�s own track really, a totally different, but equally as strong, version featuring a driving baseline and detroit style string vamps. a really nice release, worthy of your support, from a well loved veteran of the techno underground.

cymasonic s offshoot vinyl-only label returns with the enigmatic argentinian artist fede zerdan contributing to cymawax s second outing. originally from tucumán, but currently living in barcelona, zerdan has established himself as a member of the discos paradiso crew. it s always the heads-down types that are the ones to watch out for and zerdan exemplifies letting the music do the talking. so what is he saying with the low boost ep? techno is unrivaled when it s at its most deep and immersive. a must have � this techno artifact was meant for wax.

moving to a different city always seems to mark a new time in my life musically. boston has become my new home after living in hartford, ct and new york city before that. the music on this release is a representation of me settling into a new environment. i have slowly realized that the music i make is mostly therapy for myself. it is what i believe that i need to hear at the time in order to be at peace with whatever situation i am in. in that regard, the music is very much who i am.

manchester producer hidden spheres blends the interesting elements he finds within recordings into soulful dance music suited for clubs and the living room. those influences combine jazz artists like sun ra, john coltrane, the art ensemble of chicago, and miles davis along with the modern sounds of detroit and german producers. having released individual tracks on dirt crew his first solo ep appropriately finds its way to moods & grooves, a label known its eclectic output. the bloos connects the musical dots of his influences while expressing a love for house music.

the detroit music community has outposts in nearly every major city, and vancouver, british columbia is no exception. this ep represents the connection of two such artists, detroit native, josh garrett, who currently resides in vancouver and runs the subspec label, and rennie foster, a stalwart of the underground, who has spent a quarter of his life in tokyo, but born in bc and now living back there, in vancouver. rennie has released on a myriad of detroit labels, such as transmat, teknotika, soiree, subject detroit, wallshaker, and motech. josh and rennie met in vancouver, only since rennies recent return, and realizing they were of the same tribe, immediately began to collaborate on a number of projects, now including this limited run, double a-side, record, chalk full of dj friendly techno trax, firmly rooted in the motor city sound, yet unique enough to be a contributor, not just another imitator.

it s a big honor that the former member and -minister of information- of underground resistance from detroit alan oldham aka dj t-1000 does a remix for this release. living between berlin and detroit, alan is a mastermind in electronic music and has pitched this track to a strong minimal -detroit meets berlin- version. the gunman remix is a more dramatic sub bass story. with snipped parts of the sigrid elliot vocals, a volumized organ and fx sounds, gunman gives you a blast for the dancefloor peak time. simon beeston, a music lover from new zealand who s also living in berlin, does a deep remix. with drums and a nice sub bass, he s showing his style.

if you re going to have an experience, it might as well be a luxury one. lux experience is a mysterious norwegian producer, who presents us with a selection of steamy late night disco re-edits dripping in luxury, trawling his vinyl collection for the choicest sample material. the shimmering disco boogie of doin it is a tribute to one of norway s longest living club nights, dance dance dance is a cover, not an edit, of the classy chic classic and finally u cant hide is a vintage vocal disco gem.

today gregor returns home with two slamming new tracks, both of which are the result of hours of tweaking and testing whilst on the road this summer. midas is built around a stripped back single-riff groove. minimal elements and maximum effect show that gregor still has that midas touch. on the flip and easily living up to its name is disturber. its snarling synth takes centre stage, intimidating and unsettling. but as the kick drum thumps and the intensity builds, disturber suddenly returns to the dark shadows.

wph kicks off 2015 with a new e.p. by the mighty luv jam from wales. living in a universe that is entirely his own andrew cole has cooked up two more of his �especially for wph�-tracks. one here at wph hq can only be flattered! �californian freestyler� is the more peak time burner of the two, but �bmx bandito� will not disappoint the more discerning punters out there either. on remix duty we find the main artist from our friends at uncanny valley in dresden, jacob korn. any work by jacob is always a treat and this here is no exception. flexing our digging talents we have also licensed a luv jam remix from the good people at panta rhei that was only released on limited 7�. we feel it deserved to be on a 12�, so there.
